Hi, I'm Michael Callan
Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist at Busselton
BHSc (Hons), MPT, MClinPT (Musculoskeletal)
With a wealth of knowledge and a passion for empowering his clients, Michael thrives when working with those who are proactive and eager to understand and address the factors behind their health problems.
His journey into healthcare began when he volunteered at a physio clinic while attending university. On his very first day, he watched a stroke survivor walk unaided for the first time in a year, an experience that left a profound impact and set him on the path to becoming a physiotherapist.
Michael’s dream client is someone who wants to take charge of their health, ask questions, and learn more about their condition. He loves when individuals become the driving force in their own wellbeing, realising they can build the fitness and resilience of their body regardless of past injuries. Rather than dictating instructions, Michael offers his clients options and a say in managing their health problems so they feel actively involved in their own care.
“Most people working in health don’t work with people, they give advice, tell what to do or give instructions. I try to give people options and give them a say in how their problem is going to be managed.”
His passion extends beyond in-clinic physiotherapy. Michael is deeply committed to mentoring and helping colleagues improve their skills. He’s supervised both undergraduate and postgraduate students, and he continues to pursue ongoing education and mentoring for his peers.
As a former high-level tennis player and golfer, he has a personal understanding of the physical demands of sports. He has also worked with the Hopman Cup and first-grade rugby union. His 13-year career has provided him with comprehensive experience, including assisting NDIS participants.
Outside of his professional life, Michael enjoys quality time with his family, playing the guitar, going to the gym, and engaging in sports like tennis and golf.
He wishes more people understood that exercise and movement not only expedite the healing process but also provide pain relief.
